About the Time Calculator

Use a time calculator when you need to add or subtract durations expressed as hours and minutes. It is useful for schedules, elapsed time, planning, and everyday time math.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the hours and minutes for the first duration.
  2. Choose whether you want to add or subtract.
  3. Enter the hours and minutes for the second duration.
  4. Review the result in hours and minutes and as decimal hours.

How the calculation works

The calculator converts both durations to total minutes, performs the selected operation, and converts the result back to hours and minutes. Decimal hours are total minutes divided by 60.

Example

2 hours 45 minutes plus 1 hour 30 minutes equals 4 hours 15 minutes, or 4.25 decimal hours.

Things to keep in mind

  • 60 minutes equals one hour, so the calculator automatically carries minutes into hours.
  • Subtraction is limited to a non-negative duration in this tool.
  • Use the decimal result when a form or timesheet asks for decimal hours.
  • For clock times across midnight, the Hours Worked Calculator is a better fit.
